Number of connections should not matter.
We personally know companies with hundreds of users simultaneously connecting and working with cloud servers.
No need at all to connect and disconnect every-time. This is definitely not an efficient way.

Have you checked firewall settings: Make sure that the firewall on your work network allows outgoing FTP connections.
FTP typically uses ports 20 and 21 for data transfer. Ensure that these ports are not blocked by the firewall.
