But the reason that I have to have add, edit, and view displayed differently is because of (intended) system security i.e. if a user does not have sufficient priveleges to add, or edit, or add only or edit only, and can only view (by double clicking on a record for example) ...

Hardware management

I don't think I mean SMTP but you are probably right in me having the wrong abbrevation. The protocol I am looking for has noting to do with mail, it is intended to query hardware devices on a lan and get information about their status.
