Re: FiveWeb (FiveWin days are numbered)

George, of course, you can use ADS like other DBMS like MS SQL or MySQL. You can use SQL with your DBF now without change your code, you don´t need a ADS remote server, SQL work with local server too, the difference with remote server is the transactions, with local server don´t work the transaction...

Re: FiveWeb (FiveWin days are numbered)

Thanks Marcelo for your answer. I am ADS user, since many years ago, but using only ADS as substitute for DBF. My question is because I am thinking to migrate to SQL and I would like to know if ADS could be also a good substitute for standard SQL like MS-SQL and MySQL. I would appreciate any input r...

Re: FiveWeb (FiveWin days are numbered)

George, yes ADS is a good alternative, and I can say it is unique because you can access the data in the classic way table navigation ISAM and SQL. The SQL results can manipulate like a dbf tables. Migrate from classic DBF/CDX/NTX is really easy ADS has many of features of DBMS, triggers, procedures...

Re: FiveWeb (FiveWin days are numbered)

Could be ADS from Sybase:
http://www.sybase.com/products/databasemanagement/advantagedatabaseserver
an alternative to SQL to be used with Harbour + FW?

Regards,

George

Re: FiveWeb (FiveWin days are numbered)

Tim, if you make a database backup with dump or other similar technique, you can recreate a table, because you can save the tables´s data in plain text. If there are many companies or users using DBMS is because it are working good. Try to work with SQL and can never leave it Is important to keep op...

Re: FiveWeb (FiveWin days are numbered)

One of the reasons I stayed with DBF is that it is very easy to fix a damaged file, or roll back just one file to a backup, without messing up all the other data. It is my understanding with SQL that the only available fix is to restore an older backup. Example: I have a DBF file used for configurat...

Re: FiveWeb (FiveWin days are numbered)

Darrell, I would suggest as a first step to modify your app to use MySQL (You may use TDolphin library or ADO, in case that you may want to try with different databases engines). Once you have it, then you can share your data from the desktop app and the web and this would make your customers quite ...

Re: FiveWeb (FiveWin days are numbered)

Hello Everyone, Thanks for your input. I agree with everyone on a lot of points. However, we have a lot of customers asking that our major application be converted to a web based application. Our competitors are working on converting their legacy applications to web based applications and we must mo...

Re: FiveWeb (FiveWin days are numbered)

They are good, but in the end, it boils down to web based apps needing to be HTML5 and Java ... and therein lies the major problems. Tim, I agree. Serious business needs serious software. I think we can see more developers offering cloud database in addition (or instead) to local database, but desk...

Re: FiveWeb (FiveWin days are numbered)

Web based apps are certainly a "discussion", but in my experience, they are mostly promoted by people with great tech skills and very little understanding of what business software needs to work properly. I have spent 2 years watching the "evolution" of Visual Studio, and the Mic...

Re: FiveWeb (FiveWin days are numbered)

Hello,

I actually think that desktop applications still have a long journey.

However, it is necessary that certain aspects (eg. Browsing clients, add a client, a budget, etc.), can be accessed from a tablet and from the mobile phone itself. For example, when the user is out of the office, etc.

Re: Que significa por favor.. FiveWeb (FiveWin days are numbered

Hola,
