Mod Harbour installation -

Dear Antonio,

I am currently testing the Mod Harbour installation and have documented all the steps.

I would like to encourage more FiveWin users to start using Mod Harbour. The installation process is quite straightforward, and I will also share the PowerShell files that configure the firewall settings.

Ruth will then demonstrate how to install SSL certificates, including purchasing them, and how to buy a domain and link it to your own server.

Our goal is to install as few components as possible – no XAMPP, no SQL (if you do not work with SQL), only the Mod Harbour module.

I noticed that the Mod Harbour download.zip includes a libharbour.dll file (6,816,768 bytes, dated 02.09.2023 at 21:51) which does not work on my system. However, when I replace it with another libharbour.dll file (6,816,768 bytes, dated 22.01.2024 at 08:51), everything works fine.

Could you please test this and let me know your findings?

Hallo João,

DBF support on the web is something unique and native that mod harbour offers. This is the key selling point.

When we talk about mod harbour, we should mention SQL only as an option for those who absolutely want SQL. DBF with mod harbour works much better than in the desktop network versions.

You can compare it to a single-user system. Data and programs are on one machine, and the requests are only made by one user, the server.

DBF is the main argument for mod harbour!

You are right, it is not a good marketing name.

I think SQL is also good and faster and more powerfull than DBF .

Here in belgium, if you say that you work with DBF and not SQL, people think you are someone of the past .

Try SQL and you will never go back to DBF .

But for the type of application I am making, DBF is simply more suitable.

I think it is not important what you use - the application is what matters.
I mean, you can use SQL, it's not a problem - except that you have another SERVER running on the web.

We have been using RDP for years and all programs are run via RDP. And now with mod harbour, you have the same situation. It is like a single-user system.
I repeat here once again: It is like a single-user system!

But the debate over SQL or DBF is completely uninteresting, just like what others say. The only thing that matters is that your application is unique.


I think telling potential users that they have to use SQL to start with mod_harbour is inappropriate. It's just too much new information at once!

I agree with you except for one thing: DBF is much more powerful than SQL. SQL, that is a technology much older than DBF, has been made for security, not for power. Effectively, engine's authors are forced to continually modify the language to add more power and this has led to a plethora of incompatible SQL dialects. Very bad situation to me.
