Peer to Peer, NAS and NTX -> CDX

Peer to Peer, NAS and NTX -> CDX

Postby Marc Venken » Thu Dec 17, 2020 10:18 am

During the christmas leaf, i'm going to adapt a FW NTX 16 bit to CDX 32 bit.

That will speed things up and i'm more uptodate..

I can also change from peer to peer (what is no the case) to a NAS system.

We use 4 to max 5 PC in a peer to peer network with only 2 users at a time, not even the same data heavily... (No server installation) and this is ok for us.

Now we have 1 pc that is used the most time where I put the data is on. The others are connection true //carolien// ..... (network connection)

Would use the NAS as central data slow here pc significant down ? (She uses it the most)
PC 2-5 will already speed up since cdx to NTX will be much better.

The speed is not a great issue, but I wonder much, because of programming technicques and allround better performance..

What is the general idea in the forum ?

Hallo Mark,

I would suggest a remote desktop installation.
Take a notebook and install WINDOWS SERVER.
Then you create a user for each user.

All of our customers have installed WINHOTEL in this way.

Please see:
viewtopic.php?f=19&t=36412&p=217348&hilit=remote+desktop#p217348

We have SERVERBOOKS running now 24*7*365

Best regards,

Otto,

Thanks, but now i'm not going for a new installation. Overall in our situation, Speeds are acceptable (we don't know better), but
maybe we gain also with Nas as central data. I will test with the program speeds program and try to see if it will give better speeds.

Using the data on the Nas compared with the data on the most used PC now is most important. If the speed will go down, than my wife is not happy.
If my wife is not happy ....

The program above will give me a idea off speeds...

Hello Mark,
No changes are actually necessary.
You copy your local installations to the server and change the datapaths.
No change is necessary in your software.
All data and your program are in one place.

You have so many advantages with remote installation.
All accessing devices work at the same speed as the server.

WINDOWS SERVER has a backup program and then makes a full backup of your entire system.
In the event of damage (ransomware), you can simply do a restore.

Best regards,
Otto

Mark,
Your wife's PC will surely already have an SSD hard drive.
This is the most effective way to get better speeds.

Otto

Marc,

You are upgrading 16 bit to 32 bit, and changing NTX to CDX.

DO THAT FIRST. On a Peer to Peer operation as you describe, you should have great speeds for your situation.

Also, be sure you have a Gigabit network. All newer PC support this, as do any routers/switches in use for local area networks.

Once you do these two things, then you will likely be happy with the results. I have clients who run peer to peer with 2-4 computers accessing heavy amounts of data all day long, using peer to peer, and they have no complaints. ( You MUST be using the PRO version of Windows OS ... it's different networking ). For those who have higher requirements, my software is set to utilize Advantage Database Server ( ADS ) and response time is instantaneous.

In fact, she has no SSD drive. (I should have done this much early   )

I will buy 2 new systems after conversion. (New windows AND SSD drive)

I have to look into the Pro version as Tim suggest. I never thought the need of a Pro version, but as Tim points out, the difference is in the network.

On BVA Auctions, we can easily buy Win10 Pro for 25 euros

It's OEM software. For Win10 Pro, there are no differences ?

Mark,
For FIVEWIN and DBF, SSD is an enormous gain in speed.

We practically always read and write to the hard drive.
(commit, etc.)

Do you know how remote desktop works?

Better buy a WINDOWS SERVER 2016 edition.
I think you can get it for the same money.
Then you can test RDP for 120 days without restrictions.

But if you want it complicated, then don't use RDP.

Best regards,
Otto

Marc,

An OEM version is the same. Windows uses a much stronger peer to peer network in Pro than in Home.

Take this in steps. First convert the software. Then see how well it works. Since you said it's OK now, you will see performance. Absolutely do the Pro upgrade. Then see if all is OK. If not, and if your hardware is old, then upgrading it to a newer machine will give you a lot of performance boost.

I do use Remote Desktop for other purposes. It's fine until Microsoft no longer supports it ( which may happen soon ). But I think it's not the right solution in your case.

Tim,

Why do you say that?
Search for product lifecycle - Microsoft Support.
Products Released Lifecycle Start Date Extended Support End Date
Windows Server Datacenter 2019 11/13/2018 1/9/2029

>I do use Remote Desktop for other purposes.
I do not understand for which other purposes you could use RDP as to work remotely on a RDP server.

One more question :

I use a drive letter as network connection : p:\marc\data.dbf for connection

I see that a program like Goodsync Backup always converts links from p:\marc into \\carolien\marc\data.dbf, so no drive letter.

Will this maybe make a faster connection ?

Note : The speed is not a big problem... It is fast enough and with the tips from here it will speed things up. if it help, it will be a extra easy step in the conversion of the program.
No extra hardware needed, besides 2 pc's and Win Pro.

Marc, personally, I wouldn't invest much more work in a desktop application.

The times of desktop app are over. Start with mod harbour.

You can then install your own web server and only access it internally.
You can continue to use your entire program logic.
Thanks to Antonio and mod harbor.

We are currently installing web servers for our customers. You can work in parallel in the same databases (dbf, cdx, ntx).
Filelock, recordlock everything works because you work with harbour.

Maybe you can post a few screens of your program, and we could try to recreate it here in the forum together with mod harbour.

Best regards,
Otto
