Question about record and file locking

If a record or a file has been locked by another user, is there a way that I can force an unlock ?

Not that I know of. This is a good reason to use optimistic locking (lock after editing). Then the record is only locked for a split second.

What happens to locked records or files ? Are they unlocked automatically ?
