Vista won't run .HLP format help files

I came across this today. If your app has .HLP format help files they will not run under Vista--unless your users download this program. Due to Microsoft's copyright I don't think you can distribute this exe with with your app so each user would have to download and install the help exe. Now would be a good time to convert HLP files to CHM.

WinHlp32.exe is required to display 32-bit Help files that have the ".hlp" file name extension. To view .hlp files on Windows Vista, you need to install this application.

James,

Users may also copy it from XP windows directory

I guess many Vista users are running dual boot with XP

Antonio,

>Users may also copy it from XP windows directory

Thanks for pointing that out. I was wondering if that would work.

Vista is very versatile xith system files (ini files, cfg files)

It is changing and making things much more complex than before in behaviour.

Changing just a theme in windows (from aero to standard or whatever) makes ini files unaccessible to the same users.....

I am working on this at the moment, i have a brand new laptop (Vista). Our software uses a protection with Ini files in windows directory. We start facing the problems and plan to move to other extension than "ini"

I will keep posting on this. I think we should look much closer on Vista...

There is a discussion of some of the problems with INI files under Vista here:

I hope it helps.
