By converting an excel file to a dbase file the date field is switching to the american style (MM/DD/YYYY)
How to prevent or rectify this?

How are you converting Excel to dbf?
If you read excel data as a date value, you should not have any problem.
You may also consider using FWH built-in function FW_ExcelToDBF()
