Porting from Fwh to Mac

Porting from Fwh to Mac

Postby MarcoBoschi » Mon Jan 07, 2013 9:46 am

Hi,
I have to port an application program (FWH) that actually runs in windows platform to mac?

0) Fivewin - obvious
1) Mac (or emulator?....)
2) editor (I use a free editor)
3) Resource editor (this is also free)
4) linker?

what else?

I also want to know the cost of each item ( except fivewin cost: I just read! )

Many thanks
marco

Marco,

FiveMac has evolved incredibly in these past years, anyhow it will not allow you to 100% port your FWH app to Mac.

You will be able to reuse many parts of your app, but not everything as it is.

Marco,

It would be much less expensive to run your existing app on a Mac using Parallels ( or one of its counterparts ). In fact, you can actually run the program from the standard Mac desktop. It might be a fast, and cost effective, solution.

I just started using VMware Fusion on a MacBookPro. VMware has a free Player so you can copy your virtual machine to another computer and run it for free using their player. Fusion is about $50.00.

You could deliver a preconfigured virtual machine (XP, Windows 7, Windows 8, whichever os you prefer) to your customer with your software already installed and ready to go. The only cost would be the license for the copy of Windows you are giving them.

Hy guys,
I'll try as soon as possible the Antonio's solution "WineBottler".

I know other solutions "Virtual machine", not with iMac but always in a linux or windows.
Thank you all. I think the solution, however, is try to write directly using the right library (FiveMac).
I don't think my application is so complex that it does not succeed.

The problem is always the costs involved, then negotiate

Thanks for your time
Marco

P.S. my first paid iob was on a Mac (1986)

Hello Marco,
you never should get sentimental. :-)

Windows 8 is here and that is fine.

Best regards,
Otto

Windows 8 picked up over Christmas, but is growing slower than Vista did after its launch

http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2012/11/27/windows-8-touchscreen-laptops-see-slow-start/

And I am not happy about it, in fact my wish was that this would have been the opposite, but the experts that write above are no passionate about it, they simply report whats going on...

http://www.nbcnews.com/technology/gadgetbox/windows-8-adoption-rate-reportedly-worse-vista-1C7800805

Newegg’s SVP of product management told ReadWrite that Windows 8 sales “did not explode,” though he noted that they’re slowly improving. Meanwhile, manufacturers like Asus and Fujitsu have publicly said that there isn’t much consumer interest in Windows 8 at the moment, and no OEM will disclose exact Windows 8 sales. NPD recently reported that PC sales actually declined during the first month Windows 8 was on the market.

There’s still plenty of time for Microsoft’s OS to find it’s stride, but it’s safe to say that Windows 8 isn’t the sales-generating behemoth Windows 7 was, probably due to a mix of the new-look interface and overall sluggishness in the traditional PC market. We’ll have to wait until January’s numbers are tallied to see if holiday sales gives Windows 8 the shot in the arm it apparently needs.

From the point of a user – not technically
In computer history you can compare WINDOWS 8 and here I mean the so called “Metro style” only with the change from DOS to WINDOWS.
As always not everyone is switching immediately to a new system.
But it is good to know where the journey is going. The next coming years “Metro style” will be everywhere.
Maybe also other OS producers will deliver a “Metro style” clone.
Best regards,
Otto
